What you need to know and consider before your first extension appointment
Your complete guide for a perfect result
A hair extension is more than just a hairdressing appointment - it's a real change to your look, your self-confidence and often even your well-being. To ensure that your first extension appointment goes smoothly and that you get a result that looks natural and lasts a long time, there are a few points that you should definitely know and consider beforehand.
This article explains step by step how you can best prepare, what you should decide beforehand and what mistakes you must avoid at all costs.
1. Professional advice - the centrepiece of every good result
Before you even start with the insertion, you need a personal consultation, because extensions are always customised. We usually provide a brief consultation by telephone in advance if photos of the client's own hair are sent to us when the appointment is made. This gives customers a rough idea of the required quantity, the price and whether the desired result is realistic before the appointment.
In the consultation we clarify:
✔ Which method is right for you
- Keratin bonding
- Tape-ins
- Clip-ins
- Special techniques such as nano- or microbonding
Each method has different advantages. Not every method suits every hair type - which is why this step is essential.
✔ The amount of hair required
The amount of extensions required depends on several factors. On the one hand, the desired hair length and volume are decisive and whether it is only a matter of thickening or lengthening. The condition of your own hair and the current haircut are also relevant.
The right amount determines naturalness and durability. If too many extensions are used, the end result quickly looks artificial. If there are too few extensions, the transition from your own hair could remain visible or the lengths and ends could appear very thin.
✔ The right texture & colour
Choosing the right texture and colour is essential for a seamless result. Straight, slightly wavy or curly extensions are chosen depending on the structure of your own hair.
Although it is possible to appear lighter or darker overall with extensions, you must always base your choice of colour on the colour of your own hair, especially the ends. This is the only way to achieve an invisible transition from your own hair to the extensions.
✔ Your own hair condition
The condition of your own hair is decisive for the final result.
We check before inserting the extensions:
- Is your hair heavily bleached, freshly coloured or otherwise chemically treated?
- Do you have hair breakage?
- How healthy is your scalp?
Sometimes extensions have to be adapted or an alternative method chosen.
2. what you need to consider before the appointment
The preparation of the hair on the day of insertion has a direct effect on durability.
✔ Wash hair beforehand
Hair must be washed thoroughly before the appointment.
Important:
- Without conditioner at the roots
- Without products containing oil
- Without mask or leave-ins
Why? - Care products at the roots prevent bonding or tapes from holding properly.
We recommend washing the hair with a deep cleansing shampoo before insertion to prevent the extensions from slipping out.
Dry hair completely
Your hair must be completely dry before you can use extensions.
✔ No plaits, curls or straightening irons
Ideally, your hair should be in its natural shape, as this is the only way we can advise you on the structure. You should only come to your appointment with straightened hair if you would like to have straight extensions and we have clarified this in advance.
3. realistic expectations - extensions do a lot of magic, but not everything
Extensions offer impressive possibilities:
✔ more length
✔ More volume
✔ More abundance
✔ Dream hair effects
But they can not:
- heal" damaged hair
- Hiding broken, bleached top hair
- Thicken extremely fine baby hair
As an extension wearer, you need:
- Regular care
- Patience
- Realistic idea of durability
4. important dates: Pruning, inspection & care
Many do not know:
Deployment is only the first step.
Then follow:
✔ Cleaning cut / free cut (for bondings) after 6-8 weeks
With this:
- hair that has fallen out is removed
- no tangles develop
- Bondings are controlled
- loops can be corrected
The appointment only takes 30-60 minutes, but is mandatory to ensure durability.
✔ Professional removal, never do it yourself
Removing bonding or tape extensions yourself always leads to damage and should be avoided. only be done professionally.

5 The right products - you can't do without them
Extensions thrive on care. Suitable care products are therefore essential if you want to have extensions fitted.
You absolutely need:
Sulfate-, silicone- and paraben-free shampoo
→ Does not release bondings/tapes
→ Mild to the scalp
✔ High-quality mask
→ Silicone-, sulphate- and paraben-free
→ Leave on for 5-10 minutes each time you wash your hair
→ Moisture + suppleness
✔ Hair oil/leave-in conditioner
→ Silicone-, sulphate- and paraben-free
→ Against friction, dryness and frizz
✔ Extension brush
Normal brushes tear out the extensions. A suitable extension brush is a must.
✔ Heat protection
If you straighten or curl your hair, heat protection is essential. However, we also recommend using heat protection when blow-drying your hair. This must also be free from silicones, sulphates and parabens.
Products you must avoid:
- Anti-dandruff shampoos
- Deep cleansing
- Pure oil at the base
- Any products with silicones, parabens and sulphates

6 What you need to know about durability
Tapes last approx:
6-8 weeks
They must then be removed and reinserted
Bondings last approx:
3 to 5 months, depending on care and hair condition
they must then be removed and reinserted
Things that shorten the shelf life:
- Chlorine & seawater without protection
- Wrong care products
- Daily exposure to heat
- Brush too little
- Tangles at the base
Things that extend the shelf life:
- Regular brushing (3× daily)
- Braid while sleeping
- Silk pillowcase
- Regular use of hair masks and oil
- Free cut dates
7. when extensions are NOT possible
Extensions are not suitable for:
- Very extreme, disease-related hair loss
- Open scalp problems / inflammation
- hair that is too short (at least 2 cm required)
If you are unsure, we will check this during the consultation.
